The ASICS Sonicblast is a super trainer: a very tall midsole, a plate, and yet a trainer's weight. It belongs to the category that has settled between the daily shoe and the race shoe, and ASICS gets there with the best foam it has.

The spec sheet

  • FF TURBO² foam, from the same family as the Metaspeed line, sitting on a layer of FF BLAST MAX.
  • A Pebax plate running about three quarters of the shoe's length.
  • Roughly 45 mm of stack at the heel and 36 mm at the forefoot, for a drop around 8 mm.
  • About 255 g, which is remarkable for a midsole this tall.

Why put a plate in a training shoe?

Because a 45 mm midsole with no structure folds sideways. The plate is not there to propel you the way a race shoe's does: it holds the whole thing together, steadies the stride and avoids the mushiness people often hold against heavily stacked shoes.

Who is the Sonicblast for?

  • Half and full marathon training: fast long runs and long intervals.
  • Runners who want to save their race pair while training in something that feels close to it.
  • Anyone who finds the Novablast too soft once the pace picks up.

Sonicblast, Novablast or Magic Speed?

The Novablast is softer, more playful and cheaper: it is the daily trainer. The Magic Speed is lighter and closer to race day. The Sonicblast sits between them: too much shoe for a 5 km, exactly right for a 30 km at marathon pace.

It is not an everyday shoe

FF TURBO² foam performs well but lasts less than standard training foam. Rotate it with something simpler for your easy miles: your Sonicblast will last longer, and so will your legs.

A 45 mm midsole changes how the shoe feels underfoot, and that is judged by putting it on rather than on paper. Come see us near Québec City.

Frequently asked questions

What is a super trainer?
A training shoe that borrows from race shoes: a very tall midsole, high-performance foam and often a plate, but built to take more mileage than a racing pair.
Is the Sonicblast a race shoe?
No. Its plate is there mainly to stabilize a 45 mm midsole, not to propel you the way a race shoe's does. For race day, look at the ASICS Magic Speed instead.
Sonicblast or Novablast?
The Novablast is softer, more playful and cheaper: it is the daily trainer. The Sonicblast is more structured and steadier once the pace picks up, for fast long runs.
What is the drop of the Sonicblast?
Around 8 mm, with close to 45 mm of stack at the heel and 36 mm at the forefoot. That is a standard drop for the category.
