The Altra Escalante is Altra's road shoe: the brand's philosophy applied to pavement, in a model flexible and light enough for daily training.

Zero drop on the road

Like Altra's classic models, the Escalante has a 0 mm drop and a wide FootShape forefoot platform. Its Altra EGO foam and knit upper give a direct feel, noticeably closer to the ground than most modern road shoes.

That is a deliberate choice: the Escalante is not trying to stack foam, it is trying to stay out of the way between your foot and the road.

Who is the Escalante for?

  • Runners already comfortable in zero drop who want the road equivalent of their trail shoe.
  • Wide feet short on forefoot room in road shoes.
  • Anyone who would rather feel the ground than float above it.
  • Everyday wear: the knit upper carries well off the run.

What about the Escalante Racer?

The Escalante Racer is the stripped-down version, built for race day over 5 and 10 km: same geometry, less material, less weight.

Escalante or Experience Flow?

The Altra Experience Flow keeps the wide forefoot but comes up to a 4 mm drop, which makes it more approachable if you are coming from a conventional shoe. The Escalante stays pure zero drop.

The zero-drop transition

If you are starting out, alternate with your usual shoe for a few weeks. Your calves and Achilles work harder without a raised heel, and rushing is the most common cause of discomfort among people trying Altra for the first time.

Try it on in store

Come near Québec City to try it: the FootShape last is judged on the foot, not in a photo.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Escalante suitable for daily training?
Yes, that is what it is for: flexible and light enough for everyday runs, provided you are comfortable with moderate cushioning and a close-to-the-ground feel.
What's the difference between the Escalante and the Escalante Racer?
The Racer is the stripped-down version: same zero-drop geometry and same wide forefoot, but less material, built for race day over 5 and 10 km.
Escalante or Experience Flow?
The Experience Flow comes up to a 4 mm drop, which makes it more approachable if you are coming from a conventional shoe. The Escalante stays pure zero drop, for runners already used to it.
How do I move to zero drop without getting hurt?
Gradually. Alternate with your usual shoe for a few weeks and build distance slowly: your calves and Achilles need time to adapt.
