
Waterproof running shoes (Gore-Tex, often shortened to "GTX") keep your feet dry in mud, slush and shallow puddles, but they breathe less and dry more slowly. They're worth it for cold, wet or wintry trail running; for summer running or hot weather, a non-waterproof, quick-drying shoe is almost always the better choice.
At Boréal, we've been fitting runners in the Quebec City area for over ten years, and the moment the trails turn muddy in spring or fill with slush in the fall, the same question comes up: "Do I need Gore-Tex?" The honest answer is "it depends" — and this guide walks through exactly what it depends on, no marketing, so you can pick the right pair for your runs and our climate.

Waterproof, Gore-Tex, GTX: what are we talking about?
A waterproof trail running shoe has a thin membrane sandwiched between the upper and the lining. That membrane is dotted with microscopic pores: too small to let a drop of water in from the outside, but large enough to let some water vapour (your sweat) escape. That's what we mean by a waterproof, breathable membrane.
Gore-Tex is the best-known membrane. When you see "GTX" in a model name — a Salomon Speedcross 6 GTX, a Brooks Cascadia GTX, a Saucony Peregrine GTX — that's simply short for Gore-Tex, and these Gore-Tex trail running shoes all work on the same breathable-membrane principle.
GTX or a proprietary membrane? Gore-Tex isn't the only technology. You'll also see eVent, Futurelight and DryVent (two of The North Face's membranes), or in-house membranes developed by the brands themselves. They all aim for the same thing — block water while letting vapour out — with slightly different trade-offs between waterproofing and breathability. For running, the difference in feel is minor: the model itself (grip, cushioning, fit) matters far more than the membrane brand.
It helps to separate two things that often get confused. A water-repellent shoe (a "DWR" treatment on the upper) makes water bead on the surface: that helps in light drizzle, but water eventually soaks through. A waterproof shoe (with a membrane) truly blocks water… up to the height of the collar. Above the ankle there's no barrier: cross a stream or a deep puddle and water pours in over the top — and once inside, the membrane that kept it out now keeps it from getting out.
When waterproof trail shoes are worth it
A membrane shines when the water is cold and you want to stay dry to stay warm. For running in the rain when it's cold or running in the snow and slush, waterproof trail running shoes make a real difference. Concretely, a GTX pair is an excellent choice for:
- Spring and fall trail running: soaked trails, mud, dew-wet grass in the morning. Your feet stay dry and hold their warmth.
- Slush and wet snow: in early and late winter, winter running often happens in wet snow that would soak through a regular shoe in minutes.
- Cold, rainy days: below 50°F (10°C), a wet foot quickly becomes a frozen foot. The membrane makes a real difference in comfort.
- Short to moderate runs: the shorter the run, the less the slightly lower breathability matters.
In our part of the world, that covers a big chunk of the year. That's why we often recommend a waterproof pair to runners who hit the trails from fall through spring, alongside a well-ventilated summer pair.
The limits of Gore-Tex
A membrane isn't free: it adds a layer to the shoe, and that shows up elsewhere.
- Less breathability: even "breathable," a membrane vents heat less well than an open mesh upper. In hot weather, the foot overheats and sweats more.
- Slow drying: this is the real trap. If water gets in over the collar, it stays trapped. A waterproof shoe wet on the inside takes far longer to dry than an ordinary shoe.
- A bit heavier and a bit pricier: a membrane typically adds 20 to 60 g per shoe (about 0.7 to 2 oz) depending on the model, and the GTX version often costs $20 to $40 more than the standard one.
- Pointless when it's hot: in high summer, keeping feet "dry" serves no purpose — you want to move sweat out instead. A shoe that drains and dries fast is then preferable.
In other words: the membrane protects you from cold water outside, but it also "locks you in." The whole art is using it at the right time.
Common mistake
Thinking "waterproof" means "sealed in every situation." A GTX shoe is only waterproof up to the collar. Cross a stream mid-ankle and water pours in over the top — then stays stuck inside, where it dries very slowly. For routes with water crossings or in hot weather, a non-waterproof shoe that drains and dries fast often keeps the foot more comfortable than a membrane.

Bottom line: the membrane wins when it's cold and wet; the ventilated shoe wins when it's hot or you risk getting wet over the collar.
How to choose (and the alternatives)
Before choosing a GTX version, ask yourself three simple questions:
- Which season? If you mostly run trails from fall through spring, the membrane is a real plus. If it's a summer purchase, skip the GTX.
- What terrain? Mud and slush → GTX. Water crossings → non-waterproof that dries fast.
- How long are your runs? Short to moderate → the small breathability hit goes unnoticed. Very long and intense → prioritize ventilation.

Alternatives to a membrane:
- Waterproof socks (membrane type) over a non-GTX shoe: you keep the shoe's breathability in summer and add waterproofing only when you need it.
- Merino wool socks: they keep the foot warm even when damp — a simple trick for cold runs without going GTX.
- Trail gaiters: they keep snow, debris and water from getting in over the collar — exactly where the membrane stops.
And for outings that are as much hiking as running in the mountains, some reach for lightweight hiking shoes; but as soon as you're really running, a dedicated trail shoe stays more flexible and better suited.

Does Gore-Tex wear out?
Yes, but rarely where you'd think. The membrane itself is very durable: well cared for, it often outlasts the shoe. What goes first is the water-repellent treatment (DWR) on the upper. When water stops beading and the fabric "drinks" it in, the upper gets saturated and it feels like the shoe is no longer waterproof — when the membrane underneath is still doing its job. The good news: DWR can be reactivated (clean, then apply a repellent spray).
The other factor is mechanical wear: repeated flexing at the crease, abrasion from mud, and especially drying on a heat source eventually fatigue the membrane and create micro-leaks. In practice, a well-maintained membrane stays effective for most of the shoe's life — it's usually the flattened cushioning and rounded lugs that make you replace the pair before it does.
Maintaining waterproofing
A well-kept membrane holds its performance longer. Three habits:
- Keep the upper clean: dried mud clogs the pores and makes the upper "wet out." A rinse with lukewarm water and a soft brush is usually enough.
- Reactivate the DWR: over time, water stops beading on the surface. A repellent spray restores that effect and takes the load off the membrane.
- Air-dry, never on a heat source: no radiator or dryer — heat damages the membrane and the glues. Pull out the insole and stuff with newspaper to speed up drying.
