How to Choose Trail Running Shoes: The Complete Guide

For over ten years, we've been fitting runners in the Quebec City area for both the road and the trails. And one question keeps coming up : “Can I use my road shoes on the trail?” You can, a little. But as soon as the terrain gets serious, a real trail running shoe changes everything : grip, protection, stability and confidence on the descents. Here's how to make the right choice.

Trail vs. road : what's the real difference?

A road shoe is built for a smooth, predictable surface. On the trail, everything changes : the ground moves, slips, climbs and drops. Four things set a true trail running shoe apart from an improvised all-terrain shoe.

Grip : lugs matched to the terrain

A trail outsole uses lugs and sticky rubber compounds that bite into mud, wet rock and loose ground. 4-to-5 mm lugs offer great versatility ; deeper lugs excel in mud.

Protection : rock plate and reinforcements

Many models integrate a protective plate underfoot and toe reinforcements to absorb impacts from roots and stones — a real asset on technical ground.

Stability on uneven terrain

A lower platform and a reinforced hold keep your foot secure on off-camber sections and descents, where a road shoe gives way.

Drainage and waterproofing

Waterproof (GORE-TEX) versions keep your feet dry in mud, slush and cold : ideal in fall and early winter. In summer, a breathable upper that drains fast is often more comfortable than a membrane.

7 criteria for choosing the right pair

1. Type of terrain

This is the starting point. On rolling trails (wide paths, gravel, packed woodland), a versatile model with moderate lugs is enough. On technical terrain (rocks, roots, off-camber), go for a protective plate and aggressive grip. In the mud, deep lugs rule.

2. Distance and use

For short, lively outings, a light, responsive shoe is enough. For long distances and ultras, look for more generous cushioning that protects your legs after several hours. For racing, lightness comes first, sometimes with a propulsive plate.

3. Lug depth

3-4 mm lugs : perfect for rolling trails and a bit of road. 4-5 mm : the ideal all-round compromise, the one we recommend most often. 6 mm and up : reserved for mud and soft ground, but less comfortable on hard surfaces.

4. Cushioning and drop

Two distinct settings, often confused. Cushioning (the foam underfoot) protects your legs : maximum cushioning, with a stack of 35 mm and up, absorbs impacts on long outings, while a thinner midsole keeps a better feel for the ground and more foot precision.

The drop (heel-to-toe height difference) shapes your stride. On the trail, the drop is generally lower than on the road : it keeps your foot closer to the ground for a more direct feel, safer grip on descents and off-camber, and a quicker toe-off. A high drop (8-10 mm) reassures runners used to the road ; a low drop (0-4 mm) loads the calf and Achilles more : all the more reason to transition gradually.

5. Waterproof (GORE-TEX) or breathable?

A waterproof membrane keeps the foot dry in mud and cold, but breathes less and dries more slowly once soaked from above. Our advice for Quebec : a breathable version in summer, and a GORE-TEX version for muddy spring, rainy fall and cold outings.

6. Protection

Rock plate, toe bumper, reinforced upper : the more technical your terrain, the more these protections matter. On rolling trails, you can skip them to gain lightness and flexibility.

7. Fit

This is the deciding factor. The heel must be well held (no slipping on climbs), and you need room at the toes for long descents, where the foot slides forward in the shoe. Common mistakes

We see them often in store. Knowing them is already a better way to choose your off-road running shoes.

  • Choosing lugs that are too aggressive. 6 mm and deeper lugs are great in mud, but uncomfortable and unstable on dry or hard trails. For versatile use, 4-5 mm is plenty.
  • Buying GORE-TEX in mid-summer. A waterproof membrane keeps water out… but also heat and sweat in. In summer, a fast-draining breathable upper is more comfortable.
  • Switching to a 0 mm drop overnight. Too fast a change overloads the calf and Achilles. Lower the drop gradually, over several weeks.
  • Buying a shoe that's too small. On descents the foot slides forward : leave a bit of room at the toes (often a half-size up from your street size) to avoid black toenails.

Trail running in Quebec : mud, rocks and seasons

Our boreal trails have character. Spring is often muddy and soaked : this is the time for deep lugs and, if you hate wet feet, a waterproof version. In summer, go for a breathable upper that drains fast after a puddle or a stream. Fall mixes slippery dead leaves, roots and wet rock : grip and protection become essential.

Can you run on trails in road shoes?+

On a wide, dry path, yes, once in a while. But as soon as the terrain turns muddy, rocky or slippery, a road shoe lacks grip, protection and stability. A real trail running shoe is safer and more comfortable, and it lasts longer in those conditions.

What drop should you choose for the trail?+

On the trail, the drop is often lower than on the road to keep the foot close to the ground and grip safer. An 8-10 mm drop suits runners used to the road ; a 0-4 mm drop loads the calf and Achilles more. Choose based on your habits and make any transition to a lower drop gradually.

Do I need the waterproof (GORE-TEX) version?+

The GORE-TEX version keeps feet dry in mud, slush and cold : it's ideal in spring, fall and early winter. In summer, a fast-draining breathable upper is often more comfortable, since a membrane soaked from above dries slowly. Many Quebec runners own both.

What's the difference between a trail shoe and a hiking shoe?+

A trail running shoe is flexible, light and meant for running : it favours a dynamic stride. A hiking shoe is stiffer and heavier, built for walking long with a load on your back. To run on trails, choose a trail running shoe.

How often should you replace trail running shoes?+

On average every 600 to 800 km, but the terrain speeds up wear : watch the lugs most of all. Once they're well rounded off, grip drops and it's time to change.

Are there trail running shoes for winter in Quebec?+
