What makes a good winter shoe

Waterproofing (Gore-Tex / GTX)

A waterproof, breathable membrane like Gore-Tex keeps water, slush and melting snow out while letting sweat escape. It's the key to keeping feet dry — and therefore warm.

Grip on snow and ice

Deep-lugged outsoles, sometimes compatible with ice spikes, provide the traction needed on slippery surfaces. Many trail models make excellent winter road shoes thanks to their grip.

Warmth and protection

A denser upper blocks the wind, and some models add light insulation or a higher collar to keep snow out.

Do I need ice spikes?

On sheer ice and icy sidewalks, removable spikes add valuable safety. Some winter shoes are designed to accept them; other aggressive-grip trail models are enough on packed snow. When in doubt, ask for advice in store.

Should I size up half a size for thick socks?
Often yes, especially with thicker merino socks in winter. Try them on with your seasonal socks to confirm comfort and circulation.
How do I care for waterproof winter shoes?
Rinse off salt and slush with lukewarm water, let them air dry (away from direct heat) and reactivate the upper's water-repellent treatment as needed to preserve waterproofing.
