Women's base and mid layers for running

Running comfortably in the cold starts with a well-planned layering system. Our women's base and mid layers — in merino wool or technical synthetic fabrics — manage moisture, retain heat and let you keep training all winter, without overheating or chills.

Understanding the layering system

The base layer: managing moisture

Worn directly against the skin, the base layer wicks sweat to keep you dry. It's the most important piece in cold weather: dry skin is warm skin. Go for a fitted, close-to-the-body cut.

The mid layer: retaining heat

Over the base layer, the mid layer (long-sleeve top, half-zip, technical sweatshirt) traps heat while letting the whole system breathe. In deep cold, add a windproof running jacket as the outer layer.

Merino or synthetic: which to choose?

Merino wool

Smartwool merino base layers naturally regulate temperature, stay warm even when damp and resist odours — ideal for long winter runs.

Technical synthetics

2XU thermal compression tops support the muscles while wicking sweat, Mizuno's Breath Thermo generates heat on contact with moisture, and Under Armour pieces excel in the cold. Fast-drying, perfect for intense efforts.

Dressing for the temperature

Golden rule: dress as if it were about 10 degrees warmer, because effort warms you up fast. Between 0 and -10°C: a base layer plus a mid layer is often enough. Below -10°C: add a windproof outer layer and protect your extremities with our winter running accessories. Also consider women's winter running shoes for grip on snow and ice.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between a base layer and a mid layer?
The base layer is worn against the skin and manages moisture to keep you dry. The mid layer goes over it and adds thermal insulation. Together they form the foundation of an effective cold-weather layering system.
Merino or synthetic for the base layer?
Merino naturally regulates temperature, stays warm even when damp and resists odours — ideal in cool to cold weather. Synthetic is lighter, dries faster and suits intense efforts. The choice depends on your runs and preferences.
How do I dress for the temperature in winter?
Golden rule: dress as if it were about 10°C warmer, since effort warms you fast. Between 0 and -10°C, a base layer and a mid layer are often enough; below -10°C, add a windproof outer layer.
Can I wear a base layer on its own?
Yes, in cool weather (5 to 12°C), a breathable long-sleeve base layer is often enough on its own. As it gets colder, pair it with a mid layer, then a protective jacket.
How do I care for technical layers and merino?
Wash in cold water, without fabric softener (it clogs the fibres). For merino, use a gentle soap and dry flat. Air drying preserves elasticity and thermal properties.
