Smartwool merino wool base layers

The base layer is the most important piece of a layering system: worn next to the skin, it wicks sweat and holds in warmth. Smartwool base layers in merino do it naturally while limiting odours, for winter running, cross-country skiing, hiking or everyday wear.

Which Smartwool line should you choose?

Classic Thermal Merino: for deep cold

The Classic Thermal Merino line is the warmest. Crews, half-zips and bottoms designed for sub-zero days and moderate-intensity activities.

Classic All-Season Merino: versatile

Thinner, the All-Season line works from fall to spring, on its own on cool days or under a jacket when it's cold.

Intraknit: targeted insulation and ventilation

Intraknit technology knits warmer zones and ventilated zones into a single garment, without unnecessary seams. Ideal for high-intensity efforts when you heat up fast.

Merino 150 and Merino 250

The number is the fabric weight in grams per square metre: Merino 150 is light and breathable, Merino 250 is warmer for winter.

Crews, half-zips and bottoms

A crew neck top slips easily under a mid-layer, a half-zip or 1/4 zip lets you adjust ventilation during the effort, and base layer bottoms complete the system to keep your legs warm.

Frequently asked questions

Which Smartwool base layer is the warmest?
The Classic Thermal Merino line and Merino 250 are the warmest, designed for sub-zero days. All-Season and Merino 150 are lighter for the shoulder seasons.
What do Merino 150 and Merino 250 mean?
The number is the fabric weight in grams per square metre. The higher it is, the thicker and warmer the garment.
Is a merino base layer good for running?
Yes. Merino wicks sweat and stays warm even when damp. For high-intensity efforts, the Intraknit line with its ventilated zones is the best fit.
How should a base layer fit?
Close to the body without being tight. The fabric needs to touch the skin to wick moisture well, while leaving full freedom of movement.
How do I care for a merino base layer?
Wash in cold water with a mild detergent, without fabric softener, and dry flat. Thanks to its natural odour resistance, merino can be worn several times between washes.
