Men's trail running shoes

Roots, rocks, mud, snow: the trail is unforgiving to road shoes. Our men's trail running shoes — Salomon, Inov-8, Brooks, Saucony, ASICS, Mizuno and Altra — deliver the grip, protection and stability you need to attack technical terrain, from the local park to mountain ultras.

What sets a true trail shoe apart

Grip: lugs matched to the terrain

A trail outsole uses lugs and sticky rubber compounds that bite into mud, wet rock and loose surfaces. 4-to-5 mm lugs offer good versatility; deeper lugs excel in mud.

Protection: rock plates and reinforcements

Many models integrate a rock plate underfoot and toe reinforcements to absorb impacts from roots and stones — a real asset on technical ground.

Stability on uneven terrain

A lower platform and reinforced foothold keep your footing secure on off-camber sections and descents, where a road shoe gives way.

Waterproof or breathable?

Waterproof (GTX) versions keep feet dry in mud, slush and cold — ideal in fall and early winter. In summer, a breathable upper that drains quickly is often more comfortable than a membrane.

Our trail brands

Salomon and Inov-8: the specialists

Salomon (including the S/Lab Ultra Glide) is the global trail benchmark, and Inov-8 offers our widest range, from the light TrailFly to extreme-grip models.

Brooks, Saucony, ASICS, Mizuno and Altra

The Brooks Cascadia is a safe bet for getting started and eating up kilometres — up to the Cascadia Elite for racing. Saucony, ASICS (Gel-Trabuco, including GTX versions) and Mizuno round out the selection, while Altra takes a zero-drop approach with a roomy FootShape toe box, favoured on long outings.

Choosing for your kind of trail

Rolling trails: a versatile model with moderate lugs. Technical terrain: rock plate and aggressive grip. Racing and ultras: lightness, even a propulsive plate. In store, our team helps you nail the perfect fit — extended widths available too.

Complete your trail kit

For long outings in the wild, consider hydration vests and Leki running poles. Come winter, see our men's winter running shoes. Mostly on asphalt? Explore our men's road running shoes. Shopping for her? Here are our women's trail running shoes.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between trail and road running shoes?
Trail shoes add lugs and sticky rubber for loose surfaces, protection against rocks and roots, and a more stable platform on uneven ground. Road shoes prioritize cushioning and lightness on asphalt.
Can I run on the road in trail shoes?
Occasionally, yes — to reach the trailhead, for example. But on asphalt, lugs wear prematurely and comfort drops. If you split your runs, a versatile trail model with moderate lugs is the right compromise.
Do I need a waterproof (GTX) trail shoe?
In cold weather, mud or slush, yes: the membrane keeps feet dry. In summer, a breathable upper that drains quickly is often better, since water always finds its way in over the collar.
What lug depth should I choose?
4-to-5 mm lugs cover most trails. For deep mud or steep slopes, go deeper; for dry, rolling trails, a lower profile rolls better.
Which model should I start with for trail running?
The Brooks Cascadia is an accessible, versatile benchmark. The Inov-8 TrailFly and versatile Salomon models are also excellent starting points. Come by the store: the fitting makes all the difference.
Can I trail run in winter?
Absolutely — it's even magnificent in Quebec. Go for a model with strong grip, ideally waterproof, or check our winter running shoe collection with or without built-in spikes.
