Men's base and mid layers for running

Comfortable cold-weather running starts with a smart layering system. Our men's base and mid layers — in merino wool or technical synthetic fabrics — manage moisture, hold in warmth and let you keep training all winter, without overheating or chills.

Understanding the layering system

The base layer: managing moisture

Worn directly against the skin, the base layer wicks sweat away to keep you dry. It's the most important piece in cold weather: dry skin is warm skin. Go for a fitted, close-to-body cut.

The mid layer: holding in warmth

Over the base layer, the mid layer (long-sleeve top, half-zip, technical sweatshirt) traps heat while letting the whole system breathe. In deep cold, add a windproof running jacket as your outer layer.

Merino or synthetic: which to choose?

Merino wool

Smartwool merino base layers naturally regulate temperature, stay warm even when damp and resist odour — ideal for long winter runs.

Technical synthetic fabrics

2XU thermal compression tops support your muscles while wicking sweat, Mizuno's Breath Thermo generates heat on contact with moisture, and Under Armour pieces excel in the cold. Fast-drying, perfect for intense efforts.

Dressing for the temperature

Golden rule: dress as if it were about 10 degrees warmer, since effort heats you up quickly. Between 0 and -10°C: a base layer plus a mid layer is often enough. Below -10°C: add a windproof outer layer and protect your extremities with our winter running gear. Consider men's winter running shoes too for grip on snow and ice.

Questions fréquentes

What's the difference between a base layer and a mid layer?
The base layer sits against your skin and wicks sweat to keep you dry. The mid layer goes over it and traps warmth. Together they form the foundation of the layering system for cold-weather running.
Merino or synthetic for winter running?
Merino naturally regulates temperature, stays warm even when damp and resists odour — perfect for long runs. Synthetics dry faster and suit intense efforts better. Many runners alternate depending on the session.
How should I dress to run at -10°C?
Dress as if it were 10 degrees warmer: a fitted base layer and a mid layer are often enough. Below -10°C, add a windproof outer layer and protect your head, hands and ankles.
Should a base layer be fitted?
Yes. It needs to sit close to the body to wick sweat effectively. A loose base layer leaves cold air pockets and keeps moisture against the skin.
Does compression help in cold weather?
Thermal compression tops like 2XU's combine muscle support, moisture wicking and close-to-body insulation — an excellent base layer option for intense winter sessions.
How do I care for a merino base layer?
Wash cold on a delicate cycle, skip fabric softener, and dry flat or air dry. Well cared for, merino keeps its thermal and odour-resisting properties for years.
